On November 22, Nobel Prize winner and professor of Shandong University Mo Yan gave a lecture to the postgraduates from Literature and Journalism School (LJS) . The lecture was held in Mo Yan Literature Hall, which was located in Gaomi, Shandong Province. The school dean Zheng Chun also attended the lecture.

Taking his own writing as example, Mo illustrated the difference between a writer and his work. He thinks two types of differences are included, one is the difference between the characteristic of the writer and the character, the other between the real life and the illustrated life. According to him, both of the differences are affected by complicated psychological factors and act as a way to seek psychological comfort at the same time.

Afterwards, Mo elaborated his opinions upon the war literature by sharing one of his writing experiences in PLA Art Academy in 1984. Mo’s opinions could be concluded as follows: firstly, the war literatures must be the ones that transcend classes; secondly, they must be presented above the level of war; thirdly, the writers’ own reflection towards war was indispensible; lastly, the focus of war literatures should always be human beings.

Besides, Mo emphasized that literature was not to assume the responsibility to fully display history, but to expose the profound human nature, and the work recognized as a real art must be the one transcending the political boundary.

Besides, Mo emphasized that to display the history in full details is not the responsibility of Literature, while to expose the human nature should be, and real art must be beyond politics.

In addition, Mo talked about some of the influences of Nobel Prize upon his life. He said:“the Nobel Prize is like a mirror, from which we can know both ourselves and others”. “After winning this prize, I have been travelling around for one more year as a social celebrity, which is by no means an enjoyable business for a writer. What I expect most now is to continue my writing, for no such fame can compare with the value of an excellent work. ”

At the end of the lecture, three of the students put forward some problems they’ve met in their study, Mo listened to them attentively and replied to them in details. At last, Mo Yan and Zheng Chun talked things over the further course arrangement and the work for thesis supervision of postgraduate students.
